You can think of this "about" page as a sort of non-interactive, interview. Basically, these are my responses to frequently asked interview questions.
- Tell me about yourself and your interest in computers.
- I'm from Minnesota and I've lived here almost all my life. I became interested in computers in grade school while uisng an Apple IIe. After I learned how to do some very basic BASIC, I realized I could invent things without needing a factory or distribution centers or anything, just a computer with a keyboard. I was hooked. Computers developed and so did my interest in them. Now I enjoy working with computers and working with people who have the same interest in technology that I have.
- What can you tell me about yourself that would make me want to hire you?
- I enjoy working with computer and I enjoy helping people work with computers. I am easy to talk to and used to communicating at the same level of the person I'm dealing with. When it comes to technology, I pick up on things very fast and am usually thrilled for the opportunity to further my knowledge. I try to make the work place fun as well as productive and can usually find ways of making things work easier.
- What do you think your strengths are?
- I beleive my ability to communicate at the same level as other people and still be able to gather what technical information I need is one of my greatest strengths. Another strength of mineis the ability to learn an application while using it; This has come in handy when people have asked me questions about applications I've never seen before.
- What do you feel you need to work on more?
- Sometimes I spend too much time on problems that can wait, and need to re-organize my train of thought so that more urgent issues are taken care of first.
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
- I'm not exactly sure, but I do know it will be at the key's of a computer. I would like to enter a systems engineering or network administration area of a company with plenty of room for growth and advancement.
- How do you deal with stress on the job?
- I try not to become overstressed in the first place. Patience is important when dealing with pressure situations. When all else fails and there are nothing but problems, it's important to set aside a few minutes, breath, and get a train of thought. It is easier to see a solution to a problem with a clear head.
- What is an example of a unpleasent work experience, and how did you handle it?
- The most common unpleasent experiences come from irate people who demand unreasonable or unavailable service. It is important to speak calmly and attempt to explain the situation as it is. I will explain what I can do about their situation and what the limitations are. It is impossible to please everybody at the same time, so if their issue is not a genuine priority it must be explained that other people who are being severely affected by their own issues must be dealt with first.
- I see that you did not graduate from the U of Mn, why did you stop attending and do you plan on going back to college?
- I stoped going to college mostly because I ran out of my savings and noticed that I did not want a career in any of the majors then offered. I had started my support jobs and realized I was getting more experience and value though actually working than I was at school. I decided that I would work full time and when I needed more education I would probably get a certification instead of a degree. I feel that specialized technical training is more useful in this career than the material offered by the U of Mn.
- How do you feel about traveling for work?
- A small amount of traveling would be ok, a couple days a month for example, would not be much of a problem when traveling out of state. If it's local traveling you're talking about, I don't believe I would have any problems traveling to off-site locations.
- Are you willing to work weekends or non-standard hours?
- I don't have any problem working an occasional weekend or staying late under special circumstanses, however I'm not willing to work strictly weekends or late/evning shifts full time.
- Are you comfortable being on-call, and wearing a pager after work?
- I have never had a position where I've been on-call, however I don't think it would be a problem so long as the amount of support required after hours is generally within reason.
- If we offer you the position, would you be willing to relocate?
- I've lived here most of my life and enjoy this state very much, however, I am willing to listen to what kind of deal you have in mind.
